Of course ultra indie filmmaking was happening long before Anthony’s article.
The Debut, Afro-Punk, Robot Stories, and pretty much everything by Jon Moritsugu (specially the recent Hi-8 Scum Rock), also stuff by Todd Verow, preceded this moment by a good 5 – 10 years, and possibly even longer. Also in ’06 about a dozen ultra indie filmmakers wrote about their projects at the Indie Features 06 blog. But it is nice to see a relatively widely read journalist such as Kaufman write about the subject.

Kaufman’s not saying that indies have only now sprung into existence. He knows film history as well as you or I, probably better. What I meant to suggest that he “gets” is that something’s in the air here at SXSW this year.

i’ve been thinking of Todd Verow a lot lately and how his modes of lo-fi operating are starting to boom, which is fun to watch and would be even more fun to partake in.
